Iconic British Sailing brand Henri Lloyd are the latest addition to the Nordic Outdoor roster for Autumn Winter 2024. As one of the most well known and respected sailing brands in the world we’re delighted to showcase the latest collection which sees new creative director, Kestin Hare, dive into the Henri Lloyd archives to reimagine some of the labels most iconic designs.

With the new collection now landed in our Edinburgh and London stores along with filling the shelves in our virtual shopfront we thought it would be a good time to introduce the brand to those new to the world of HL.

While the new collection builds on over 60 years of history it is also a fresh take for the label, the Sportwear range we are carrying for Autumn Winter takes sailing inspired looks and distils them into an instantly wearable collection which is just at home in the city as it is on the coast.

Follow us as we dive into the history of Henri Lloyd and showcase some of the best pieces from the AW24 collection at Nordic Outdoor.

A Brief History of Henri Lloyd

One of the most common questions we see when talking about this brand is “Who actually is Henri Lloyd” and to answer this we need to go right back to 1963.

Polish born Henri Strzelecki was a keen sailor who found himself living in the UK at the end of the second World War and was passionate about yachting, sailing and outdoor lifestyle. Frustrated at the lack of clothing which would truly withstand the marine environment, Mr. Henri (as he was known in the UK) began to study, learn and work in the textile industry and while doing so discovered a lifelong passion for fabrics and design.

While manmade fabrics were still a relatively new innovation, this was an area which excited Mr. Henri and he saw the potential which nylon held as a fabric for producing durable, waterproof and weatherproof clothing.

In 1963 Henri Stzelecki joined forces with British financier Angus Lloyd to found Henri-Lloyd ltd. The brand name was an amalgamation of the two surnames and would go on to act as a stamp of quality for marine clothing for the next 60 years.

Working out of a converted chapel in Greater Manchester, the Henri Lloyd team set about sourcing innovative new materials, worked on industry first construction techniques and introduced a number of safety features to the market which would become a staple in the modern industry. Innovations including Velcro, Gore-tex and Bri-Nylon were first seen used on Henri-Lloyd apparel and it is this vision and willingness to innovate which has cemented the legacy of a sailing brand from Salford.

Determined that his sailing jackets and clothing had real world functionality, Henri Lloyd partnered with some of the most recognisable names in sailing and adventure including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Shirley Robertson.

During the 1980’s and 90’s Henri Lloyd carved out a huge following in Scandinavian countries and across the shores of Sweden, Norway and Denmark you would see swathes of people wearing Henri Lloyd jackets adorned with the brands iconic crown and wreath logo. The Scandinavian connection was deepened further when the brand was bought by a Swedish Investment firm in 2018 and began focusing on the European market.

While many things have changed since Mr Henri and Angus Lloyd put pen to paper back in 1963 the brand have retained their relentless desire to keep moving forward and to innovate at every turn.

Kestin Hare at Henri Lloyd

The Autumn Winter 2024 collection is the first Henri Lloyd release under the guidance of new creative director, Kestin Hare. Best known for his own brand, KESTIN, this is an exciting new switch for the Henri Lloyd team and the Edinburgh based designer has already put his stamp on some of the brands most iconic styles.

For the team at Nordic Outdoor, Kestin Hare feels like the perfect choice to lead Henri Lloyd into the exciting next chapter and his ethos and values are an ideal fit for our beliefs. Championing local manufacturing, high quality and innovative fabrics and the concept of sustainability through durability means this is a collection we’ve been looking forward to have on the shelves since we first saw it.

For his first collection with Henri Lloyd, Kestin Hare has dived into the brands archives and chosen to reimagine some of the labels most iconic styles. By adding modern detailing, signature touches and utilising innovative technologies – the Autumn Winter collection from Henri Lloyd is a modern take on some classic styles.
