What is The Lakes Divide Multi-Day Trail Run?
The Lakes Divide is an adventure for the ultra-curious and a perfect introduction to multi-day trail running. This event is an offshoot of the now legendary ‘Peak Divide’ and spans 72 kilometers over two days. It’s a supported run through the heart of the Lake District, one of the UK's most stunning landscapes, known for its rugged hills, serene lakes, and picturesque trails.
The story of the Peak Divide began with a simple question in a pub: “Do you think you could run from Manchester to Sheffield?” This casual challenge quickly evolved into one of the most unique and sought-after events on the UK running calendar. The essence of both the Lakes Divide and the Peak Divide is that ‘this is not a race.’ These events are designed to demonstrate that, with a little preparation and determination, anyone can take on a multi-day outdoor adventure. With a route that is 90% off-road and a 96% finisher rate, these events are incredibly inclusive, aligning with our belief at Nordic Outdoor that the outdoors should be accessible to all.
After the success of the inaugural Peak Divide in 2023 and the subsequent ONEr (the same route but completed in one long day), the organizers are back with an exciting new event for 2024 — The Lakes Divide. Starting in Keswick, participants will traverse the Lake District’s diverse landscape, covering 72 km and climbing 1500 meters in elevation. The route offers a mix of terrains, from rolling hills and rocky trails to lush forests and open fields, allowing runners to experience some of the best scenery this country has to offer.
Although the event is billed as a running challenge, The Lakes Divide is also a social experience. With over 70 runners of varying abilities participating, and the provision of hearty meals, snacks, and hot drinks throughout, it’s more than just a run—it's a community adventure. It’s fair to say that The Lakes Divide is a one-of-a-kind event, perfect for anyone looking to push their limits while making new friends and enjoying the natural beauty of the Lake District.
Nordic Outdoor and Our Role in The Lakes Divide
Nordic Outdoor's involvement with The Lakes Divide dates back to our participation in the inaugural Peak Divide in 2023, where we embraced the challenge of running from Manchester to Sheffield. Over two days, we traversed a route filled with bogs, hills, and the iconic Mount Malibu, experiencing the true spirit of adventure. From that moment, we were hooked.
When the team behind The Lakes Divide approached us for support, we were eager to get involved. These events perfectly embody the spirit of adventure and accessibility that we champion at Nordic Outdoor. We believe that the outdoors is for everyone, regardless of experience level, and we are committed to making outdoor adventures more accessible and enjoyable for all.
For the 2024 Lakes Divide, Nordic Outdoor will bring a touch of Scandinavian style and comfort to the overnight stop at Langdale. Our aim is to enhance the experience for all participants by offering a cozy and welcoming basecamp, complete with comfortable seating, warm lighting, and other amenities that create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. We’ll also provide runners with special goodies and exclusive discounts on top-quality gear to help them prepare for and enjoy the event.
With less than three weeks remaining until the event kicks off, we thought it would be the perfect time to share our expertise on how to pack for a multi-day trail running adventure. With racks of Scandinavian outdoor gear in our stores and a wealth of experience participating in these types of events, we want to ensure that you are perfectly prepared for your two-day journey.
Essential Gear and Packing List for The Lakes Divide Trail Run
Preparing for a multi-day trail run requires careful planning and the right gear to ensure comfort, safety, and performance. Here’s our recommended packing list to help you get ready for The Lakes Divide:
1. Trail Running Shoes: The Foundation of Your Run
Your choice of footwear is arguably the most critical decision for a multi-day trail run. The terrain in the Lake District is varied, ranging from rocky paths to muddy trails, so you’ll need shoes that offer excellent grip, support, and protection against the elements. Look for shoes with a durable sole, good traction, and a waterproof or water-resistant upper to keep your feet dry.
Featured Product: While not yet part of the Nordic Outdoor family we would encourage you to explore the collection of newcomers on the trail footwear scene – Nnormal. The brainchild of Kilian Jornet you can be sure these are built for even the hardiest of runs.
2. High-Performance Socks: Keep Your Feet Dry and Comfortable
Socks are often overlooked, but they are one of the most important pieces of gear for a multi-day run, especially in the unpredictable weather of the UK. Wet feet can quickly lead to blisters and discomfort, which can ruin your experience. To keep your feet dry and comfortable, we recommend investing in high-quality, moisture-wicking, and waterproof socks.
Featured Product: The Sealskinz Raynham sock is a fantastic choice, featuring a three-layer construction with a waterproof membrane sandwiched between a soft merino wool interior and a durable outer layer. This design keeps your feet dry while allowing them to breathe.
3. Merino Wool Base Layers: Your Best Friend on the Trail
Merino wool is a natural wonder material that is soft, moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating, and odor-resistant. It’s ideal for outdoor activities because it helps maintain a comfortable body temperature, wicks away sweat, and can be worn for days without developing odors.
Featured Products:
- Aclima Lightwool Sports T-Shirt: A lightweight, breathable option that combines the benefits of merino wool with advanced design for maximum comfort during high-intensity activities.
- Aclima Warmwool Mockneck: A heavier option for cooler conditions, providing extra warmth while still allowing for breathability.
4. Mid-Layers: Stay Warm When the Temperature Drops
During a multi-day trail run, especially one that isn’t a race, you’ll likely spend extended periods outdoors in varying conditions. A good mid-layer is essential to provide warmth without adding bulk. Look for options that are breathable, lightweight, and easy to pack.
Featured Product: The 66°North Grettir Zipneck is an excellent choice for a mid-layer, offering outstanding moisture management and comfort. Made from Polartec Power Dry material, it provides excellent insulation and breathability, making it perfect for the changing conditions of a multi-day trail run.
5. Lightweight Waterproof Jacket: Be Ready for Rain
The Lake District is known for its unpredictable weather, and rain is almost guaranteed. A lightweight, packable, and 100% waterproof jacket is a must-have item to keep you dry and comfortable on the trail.
Featured Product: The Helly Hansen Verglas 2.5L Fastpack jacket is perfect for this purpose, offering waterproof protection with two-way stretch for added comfort and mobility.
6. Basecamp Comforts: Relax and Recover
A big part of what makes The Lakes Divide special is the time spent at basecamp. After a long day on the trails, having the right gear to relax and recover is crucial. Bring warm, comfortable clothing for the overnight stay, including cozy layers and a down jacket to keep you warm around the campfire.
Featured Products:
- Aclima Fleecewool Hoodie: Provides warmth and comfort for relaxing at basecamp.
- Tenson Shibui Down Jacket: A versatile, packable jacket with 90% duck down filling, ideal for staying warm in cooler temperatures.
7. Little Extras: Enhance Your Experience
Once you have your main gear sorted, consider adding a few extras to make your journey more comfortable. A merino wool beanie from Aclima is perfect for keeping your head warm on cold mornings, while lightweight gloves will keep your hands warm during early starts or when the temperature drops. A reusable spork, titanium mug, and a flask for hot drinks are also great additions for your basecamp kit.
