Hi there! I’m Katy, one of the newest Nordic Outdoor staff members! I am originally from the sunny island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea but currently call Edinburgh home. You may be thinking It is quite amusing that a Mediterranean would be working for a Nordic outdoor company, and I suppose to some extent it is. Even though the climate and the lifestyle are vastly different between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean, I can assure you they both have a great love of the outdoors.

Whilst growing up I was always encouraged to go outside and get some fresh air and enjoy what nature had to offer. My family and I would go camping on the beach in the summer, and hiking in the mountains during the autumn and winter months. Granted, the Cypriot winters aren’t really winters compared to the Scandinavian ones. Even so, we knew that different clothes and equipment were needed for different weather.

My love for and understanding of outdoors and adventure really began when I joined my local scout group. I was 6 years old, just old enough to become a cub scout. I spent 12 years at that scout group going on camping trips abroad, long distance hiking and learning survival skills. The first time I ever set foot in Scandinavia was thanks to the scouts. I had the privilege of attending the 22nd world Jamboree in Sweden in 2011, and that is where my love for Scandinavia began.

I remember sitting down with my mum and scout leader going through all the gear I would need for all the different outdoor activities I would be taking part in at the Jamboree. I still own the same pair of boots I had back in 2011, they are definitely looking “well loved”. Back then I liked the gear because it looked cool, but since working at Nordic Outdoor I have learnt why these products are so good and the benefits specific features can bring. One of the best parts of my job is being able to learn all about the products and why they have been selected to be sold at Nordic Outdoor. It’s never by chance, it’s always carefully thought through.

One of my favourite pieces of equipment I had for my camping and hiking trips was my Light My Fire lunch kit. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered that Light My Fire is our Founder & Managing Director’s family business! Needless to say, I never thought I would be working alongside the people who created a piece of equipment that I took on almost every single one of my adventures!

So, in case you couldn’t tell, I am extremely excited to be working here! I have already taken out our Tentipi Demo for a test run, and it was one of the greatest, warmest and comfiest camping trips I have been on here in Scotland! I can’t wait to continue my adventure with this fantastic company and continue spreading the Nordic Outdoor ethos.
