Each axe is supplied with a leather sheath.

The Gransfors Bruks Small Hatchet, is a great axe designed for hiking where every single kilo counts. It is the perfect size to be worn on a belt, in a rucksack or stored in a toolbox. Whilst being small, the small hatchet still has a mean bite with an edge that is shaving sharp straight out of the sheath. The slightly rounded poll is designed to act as a priest when fishing. More than capable of roughing out designs when carving spoons or cups, making the initial removal of excess wood that much easier and quicker than using a knife. The Small Hatchet was designed by Lennart Pettersson (LP), axe smith, knife smith and keen angler. Each axe is supplied with a leather sheath.

In the modern age of mass production, Gransfors Bruk are something of an anomaly, with all of their axes still being produced by hand from their home in Hälsingland, Sweden.

Each axe produced by one of the brands master blacksmiths is forged with the smiths initials, as a mark of quality and a reminder of the handmade aspect of these incredible tools. Over the years some of the brands smiths have become especially revered for the quality of their product and we regularly field enquiries from customers who are looking to purchase an axe made by a particular blacksmith.

The quality of Gransfors Bruk axes is something the brand stands behind. For this reason all Gransfors Bruk axes are sold with a 20 year manufacturing warranty against the quality of the axe head. When properly cared for, these are tools which can be handed down generations.

Gransfors Bruk Materials

The environment is a core focus for Gränsfors Bruk, which is why the materials for the axe are chosen with such great care. Everything that is produced requires resources and all these resources have some impact on our environment. The choice of materials is guided by environmental considerations and aims to be positive for the employees and the end users alike.


As part of its green commitment, Gränsfors Bruk uses:

  • steel entirely derived from recycled scrap metal.

  • a hickory handle that is strong and flexible, which increases the life of the handle and thus helps reduce consumption of nature’s resources.

  • vegetable-tanned leather that is free from heavy metals and also is biodegradable.
